The goal is to help isiXhosa and Sotho first language learners adapt to being taught in English at Groenheuwel Primary school.
isiXhosa and Sotho learners are taught all their subjects in isiXhosa from Grade R to Grade 3, however in Grade 4 all teaching changes to English, making it very difficult for these children to understand their schooling. This leads to a challenge for both teachers and students to communicate effectively. Also the confidence of these learners are affected.
Our Dibels Language program seeks to change this and have done so with impressive results. Currently we are seeing a 53.3% improvement in English testing results and improvement in various other subjects since the launch in May 2015.
These independant assessments are done in partnership with the University of Potchefstroom under the leadership of Prof. Charisma Nel.
